Equality Action Now Takes On Uganda

On Tuesday, January 19 at 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Equality Action Now will be meeting at the Sacramento Gay & Lesbian Center, 1927 L Street, Sacramento, CA 95814 for “Uganda – A Human Rights Issue – A Call to Action”.

Last March, three American ultra right wing extremists, making themselves out to be “experts” on homosexuality, led a conference in Uganda where they pointed out that the norm for gays is to prey upon teenagers. They said the gays push their gay agenda onto families, destroying them. Their recommendation is that since gay people “having made a choice to be gay” and can be changed back into being heterosexual, (Ugandan gays) should be compelled to becoming straight.

A few short months later, in October, Uganda’s legislature introduced a bill making homosexual acts punishable by life in prison or even death. Oh yes, and if you were found to know something was going on between two gay people but did not report it, you are going to jail also.

All three extremists publicly have tried to distance themselves from the bill and all of the negative reaction they have come up against. They say they never would suggest that gays should be put to death, though there is no mention about the life term. But in reality they are like a person who goes into a forest and lights a forest fire. Their stated intention is not to kill anyone, however once they have lit and fanned the fire, it goes out of control and causes a great deal of destruction. In the end it is very possible the fire will kill innocent people.

It is time for decent human beings throughout the world to do what they can to put out that fire and demand that the government of Uganda put an end to the direction they are going as a country. Since the fire-starters came from the United States, it is imperative that all U.S. citizens who still believe in basic freedom and human rights for all people of the world do something to help put a stop to this madness.

President Obama has denounced the law in a written statement. We must urge him to do more. A letter to the President of Uganda should state that their country is in dire economical danger and our citizens will fully support breaking all relations with his country. Lastly, we need to launch a letter-writing campaign to our representatives in Congress to demand immediate action from both President Obama and President Museveni of Uganda.

On Tuesday, January 19, 2010 Equality Action Now, a Sacramento local grassroots civil rights organization along with Sacramento NOW is hosting an evening of letter-writing and discussion of the latest news from Uganda. All are welcome to participate from 6-8pm at the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center, 1927 L Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.
